Comfrey (Symphytum) – Also known as Knitbone, Boneset, Bruisewort, Healing Herb, Knitback, Slippery Root…  The comfrey plant has been used for medicinal purposes for over 2000 years. Comfrey has been historically used for all manner of injuries and accidents, including but not limited to broken bones. It had an equally strong reputation for helping with external wounds that were not healing properly. This versatile herb was also used extensively for tuberculosis and irritating dry lung complaints in general. The regenerative compounds found in comfrey, such as allantoin, tannins and rosmarinic acid, help to speed up the natural replacement of cells and encourage new tissue growth.
Constituents: Allantoin is a botanical extract of the comfrey plant. The flowering stock which contains most allantoin with some leaves and flowers. It has long been used for its healing, soothing, and anti-irritating properties. Allantoin helps to heal wounds and skin irritations and stimulates the growth of healthy tissue. Allantoin is able to accelerate cellular mitosis (meaning it speeds up the process of new tissue growth), while rosmarinic acid helps to relieve pain and inflammation. Other constituents include mucilage, polyphenols, amino acids, phytosterols, triterpenoids, saccharides, and pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Comfrey also contains bone-strengthening vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, Calcium and Magnesium. “It is clinically proven to relieve pain, inflammation and swelling of muscles and joints in the case of degenerative arthritis, acute myalgia in the back, sprains, contusions and strains after sports injuries and accidents, also in children aged 3 years and older.”

Allantoin can be found in anti-acne products, sun care products, and clarifying lotions because of its ability to help heal minor wounds and promote healthy skin. Allantoin is frequently present in toothpaste, mouthwash, and other oral hygiene products as well as in shampoos, lipsticks, various cosmetic lotions and creams, and other cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
The only thing is that the type of allantoin is added to commercial products is isolated from cow urine! Eew!
Allantoin is a product of the oxidation of uric acid. It is also a product of purine metabolism in most mammals except for higher apes, and it is present in their urine. In humans, uric acid is excreted instead of allantoin.
Comfrey plant would be the best source and you want to use the flowering stock which contains most allantoin with some leaves and flowers to make your product – infused oil.

How to make Comfrey infused oil:

Cut the plant material up, fill a glass jar with it (not too tight, and pour a good quality Olive oil over to the top. Leave out on your countertop for two weeks, strain as much oil out as you can and fill it up with new comfrey plant for a double infusion for another two weeks. After that, strain, and store in the fridge. This oil can be used straight from the jar for any small scrapes, bruises or cuts or made into a salve, lotion, face cream…

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), pot marigold. Calendula is a remarkable herb. have been used for medicinal purposes since at least the 12th century, The Egyptians considered them to have rejuvenating properties. In the Hindu world, the flowers were used to adorn statues of gods in their temples, as well as a colorant in food, fabrics, and cosmetics. Calendula has historically been used as a food, adding flavor to cereals, rice, and soups. Organic Shea Butter – is high in vitamins A and E and is incredibly soothing for your skin.
Raw Local Beeswax (all-natural, unrefined, no additives, etc. because it’s from my very own Buckfast breed Honeybees and those, of course, are the best!) helps to stabilize this recipe so it isn’t “liquidy”. Beeswax does not clog pores, it helps the moisturizing properties of the butters and oils in this recipe to lock into your skin so they can do their jobs.

Allergies and sensitivity:  Review all ingredients carefully to check for known allergies or sensitivities. Individual responses to herbs may vary. Always test new products for sensitivity/allergy by putting a dab on your wrist or under your chin and waiting at least 15 minutes.
