Organic Red Sage (Dan Shen) tincture. Salvia miltiorrhiza root.
Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as red sage, is a flowering plant native to China and Japan. It is part of the Mint family. The plant’s roots are called Danshen and have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2000 years.
Traditionally, Dan Shen is given to people with problems related to the heart and circulatory systems, such as high blood pressure or stroke, to activate (invigorate) blood circulation and dispel blood stasis. It is supportive of the liver, spleen, and mucosal membranes and is an overall adaptogenic herb. In modern terms, it lowers blood viscosity and increases perfusion of blood to the vital organs of the body (including the brain, heart, and kidneys) and is used in Chinese hospitals today to promote blood flow and treat vascular disease; it is also combined with Western forms of therapy to address acute myocardial infarction (heart attacks).
This herb is discussed in the book by Stephen Buhner “Healing Lyme” 2nd edition and is part of the Buhner Lyme core protocol.
According to cell studies, this herb might help the brain and nervous system by:
- Helping brain cells survive when there isn’t enough oxygen, which happens during a stroke.
- Preserving myelin sheaths – coatings around brain cells that help them send electric signals more efficiently.
- Decreasing the formation of Alzheimer’s disease-related plaques.
- Many of the compounds in Salvia miltiorrhiza increased the activities of neurotransmitters, like acetylcholine, in the brain, which may be related to the herb’s usefulness for insomnia, anxiety, and depression

Note:
It is important to understand that Chinese herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results– usually at least a month, and oftentimes longer than that… it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.
Storage: When properly stored in the amber bottles in a cool dark place, avoiding heat, sunlight, and exposure to air, all Siberian Cedar Land’s liquid herbal extracts will last about 5 years.
Safety considerations: If you have a medical condition or take pharmaceutical drugs please consult your health care professional prior to use. Do not use if pregnant, during breastfeeding, or attempting to get pregnant. Because this herb invigorates blood circulation, it is not for use during pregnancy without the supervision of a trained TCM practitioner. Additionally, it should be used with caution in situations where there is bleeding (e.g. menstruation, nosebleeds, blood in the urine, blood in the sputum etc…). *Please note the recommended dosage may differ from other sources.
