Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) (wild harvested on our land) – Yarrow is one of the very best herbs to have on hand to treat winter colds and flu. This plant is a do-it-all for flu and fever! Yarrow is both an anti-inflammatory as well as being antimicrobial. It reduces pain, is an anti-catarrhal, relaxes circulation, and is a mild sedative, too. Yarrow is most effective when taken at the onset of the flu symptoms, but it can also help before the problem starts. The chemical makeup of yarrow is complex, and it contains many active medicinal compounds which are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, astringent, bitter, digestive, hypotensive, nervine…To read more about Yarrow go HERE.
Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) (wild harvested on our land) also called Indian Sage, this Native American remedy for colds and fever was adopted by early settlers. The name refers to the plant’s ability to treat a bone-breaking fever, a viral infection that causes such intense muscle pain that sufferers feel their bones were breaking, usually caused by the Dengue Fever virus. Only the advent of aspirin displaced boneset as the popular choice for home remedies. Boneset is still one of the best herbal remedies for the flu and fevers. Boneset tea is very bitter so you may have to bribe the patient to take it. A generous dollop of honey will improve the taste and soothe sore throats.

When to use: High fever. To support tissues of the mouth and throat. When seeking a little after-dinner digestive support. When the tips of fingers and toes feel chilled. During travel or challenging circumstances. Throughout the winter and colder months. When occasional deep muscular aches are present. As a tonic for strong and healthy bones, ligaments, joints, and tendons. To encourage digestive juices and function. When seeking support with healthy menstrual flow and ease.  When feeling stuck in some way.
Suggested Use: Add 10-50 drops (0.5-2ml) to 1 ounce of water or juice up to 4 times/day as needed or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.
For those who don’t like the taste of extract tinctures, adding the dose to a tablespoon of water or juice is an excellent means of administration. Those who worry about the alcohol may add the dose into 1 oz of hot water in a wide glass and let sit, so the ethanol would evaporate. Shake well before using. Store in a dark, dry place. No refrigeration is necessary.
Infants & Children Dosage:
6-12 months old – 1/10th of an adult dose
1-6 years old – 1/3 adult dose
7-12 years old – 1/2 adult dose.
SHAKE WELL BEFORE EACH USE!

Should you fight a low-grade fever? A raised temperature is the body’s normal response to infection. It is a sign that the immune system has started responding positively. The temperature rises to create an internal environment that is not compatible with pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Recovering from an infection is one of the body’s most important self-healing processes. A fever also triggers the release and encourages the flow, of immune cells to a needed area. It stimulates the production of various immune complexes like leukocytes, interleukins, interferons, and tumor necrosis factors as part of an acute inflammatory response to an infectious agent.
A fever, while uncomfortable, will reduce the life span of pathogens, shortening the length of time that disease can take hold, thus fevers are a beneficial process and a positive indicator of healthy immune function. When you know a fever is there to help, it gives us a different viewpoint. When we see the arrival of a fever, we know that it will be uncomfortable but it will also mark the stage where recovery can start to occur afterward.
A mild fever usually requires no treatment, but if you become uncomfortable, begin vomiting, or are having trouble sleeping, natural remedies can help to reduce the fever. You should always consult your health provider if the body’s temperature reaches 103 degrees F or higher, or if the fever lasts longer than 72 hours. Otherwise, let your immune system work and do what it does best.
My Organic High Fever Herbal blend is another option to reduce fever. It is a gentle and effective herbal tea formula that contains herbs that were traditionally used to lower fever, support the body’s vitality and the respiratory system in order to help to fight off viral and bacterial infections. Safe for kids and adults unless allergic to any of the ingredients listed.
Here is a link to a video explaining the physiology of fever (part 1).  Part 2.
